Industrial Floor Slabs

Dorlan Engineering is an industry leader and innovator in industrial floor slab design. We provide a wide range of industrial floor solutions, from traditional rebar-reinforced saw cut slab-on-grade to cutting edge fibre-reinforced jointless floors and each floor is meticulously designed to address the specific needs and challenges of our clients. After a conversation with our expert design team, we help clients to decide between a conventional slab design, a jointless slab design, or somewhere in between.

Conventional Floor Slabs

A conventional floor slab could either be plane or reinforced concrete. Reinforcing options would be with fibres, rebar or wire mesh, and the slab would be saw cut to control cracking. These design options can all be applied to slab-on-grade, slab-on-fill, or slab-on-pile designs, depending on the quality of the subgrade. A conventional slab has the benefits of being cost effective and easy pour, with much less time and preparation needed pre‑pour.

Extended Joint and Jointless Floor Slabs

Our extended joint and jointless floor slabs are a premium product designed to maximize sustainability, and operational efficiency, subsequently increasing long-term earning for our clients. With up to 200 feet between construction joints with no saw cuts in between, these floors crucial for buildings with heavy automation as the lack of joints allows for machinery and robotics to traverse floors unimpeded while reducing wear. Additionally, food and beverage buildings greatly benefit from the reduced risk of contamination caused by cracks in the floor slab.

Armoured Joints

Armoured joints protect your floor from the wear and tear caused by forklift and other heavy machinery traffic as the pass over construction joints. Used in tandem with extended joint or jointless floors, they enable for increased efficiency and productivity as forklifts need not reduce speed as often and as drastically. Armoured joins can be installed across an entire building or just in high traffic areas. While they do cost a premium, the savings from increased efficiency and reduced repair costs are very desirable to many clients.

Cold Storage

A cold storage building has large capacity coolers or freezers meant for food storage or other temperature sensitive items. It is susceptible to heavy loads while also needing ample moisture resistance and thermal insulation. Our experience with cold storage enables us to design sub-zero facilities that meet all our client’s needs without heaving or cracking.

Food & Beverage

Food and beverage buildings must minimize potential contaminants, while also accommodating large specialty equipment. This makes them excellent candidates for the use of jointless floor slabs, as saw cuts can be a refuge for foreign materials to accumulate. Such buildings may also require cold storage areas, that must be isolated from the rest of the slab.

Complex Structures

Not every engineering problem can be approached in the same way, often our clients approach us with complex challenges that require novel solutions. Whether it may be [example1] or [example2], our engineering team is prepared to offer expert advice and designs that match our client’s ambitions.

Heavy Industrial

Heavy Industrial buildings have large-scale machinery leading to increased loads, clear height, and wear. Overhead cranes are often required for material handling, further adding to the structure’s load. A properly engineered floor slab and steel structure is paramount for the building’s longevity and worker’s safety. Dorlan’s has experience will all manner of heavy industrial structure and designing a building that holds up to strenuous wear.

Manufacturing

A building designed for manufacturing will have specialized infrastructure and increased power demands. Design considerations may include ventilation for harmful fumes, increased load from heavy machinery, oversized loading docks, or specialized finishes to combat harsh chemicals that can cause a concrete slab to deteriorate.
